iridescent inner nacre layer of the shell of abalone.
Abalone (from Spanish Abulón) are
medium-sized to very large edible sea snails, marine
gastropod mollusks. Because many of these species are highly
iridescent, with bright and changeable colours, making
abalone jewelry highly sought after.
